The European Alps are a large mountain range that stretch from France to Slovenia. The Swiss Alps are the central portion of the European Alps; they include most of its highest peaks. The Swiss Alps cover 65% of Switzerland’s total land mass, making it one of the most mountainous of European countries. Although the Swiss Alps cover most of Switzerland, it is a lesser populated region of the country. However, the Swiss Alps are popular among outdoor enthusiasts for hiking and trekking tours. Some of the most popular long-distance treks in Europe lead through them. From Basel, where I live, it takes less than 3 hours by train to reach the Bernese Alps.
