Viburnums are related to the honeysuckles and many of them have fragrant flowers.
Fragrant viburnum is native to China; the deciduous shrub reaches 3 to 4 m in height. New foliage is bronzy, maturing to dark green, and culminating in reddish-purple fall color.
The trumpet–shaped flowers appear on naked stems before the leaves very early in spring and are about 1 to 1.5 cm across. They are pinkish red in bud then open to white with a pink tinge. The drupe appears in the late summer and is red to black.
Fragrant viburnum is attractive to bees and butterflies who feed on its nectar. It is beneficial to birds for its fruit.
