The brain of a cat, while smaller than ours, is a lot like it. It has frontal, temporal, occipital and parietal lobes just like a human brain. The brain of a cat is also made up of white and gray matter.

Cats’ short-term memory span lasts for about 16 hours as opposed to dogs’ which lasts for only 5 minutes. Research has found that a cat’s memory is comparable to a 2-3 year old child. Thus, cats are able to perform problem solving tasks such as puzzles and mazes.

Cats’ long-term memory is truly exceptional. Cats that have developed a close relationship with their human companions display strong affection and emotional ties to those people and can remember them for a long time. This explains why even after being separated from their long-term owners for a while, when they are reunited, cats can still recognize persons from their past.

A cat that has been abused by humans, is distrustful of them. Once the memory is solidified, it instructs the brain to associate humans with threat and danger. This is why in order to regain trust from an abused or neglected cat, a patient, steady process is needed.
