Garden Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) (2)

The flowers of garden nasturtium are long-stalked and funnel-shaped, 2.5–6 cm in diameter, with five petals and eight stamens. They vary from yellow to orange to red. The fruit is 2 cm broad, three-segmented, each segment with a single large seed 1–1.5 cm long.

Today’s photograph shows a close-up of a garden nasturtium flower throat. When you look closely, you will see a psychedelic display of colors. These patterns may be signals to direct pollinating insects toward the nectar source.
