Hedgerow Cranesbill (Geranium pyrenaicum) (1)

Hedgerow cranesbill, also named mountain cranesbil, is native in the southern Alps, the Pyrenees and the Caucasus, and now naturalized in many other places. It can be found along hedgerows, in meadows and on waste and cultivated land.

Hedgerow cranesbill is a perennial. It can grow to about 60 cm high with small delightful purple to mauve-pink flowers from June to August. The flowers consist of 5 deeply notched petals, the leaves are rounded, lobed and mid-green. The plant lacks a rhizome. Instead, it has a taproot crowned by a short and vertical rootstock [an underground part of stem which can bud off new shoots each year].

Hedgerow cranesbill is attractive to bees and butterflies.
