Garden Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) (3)

The circular, green leaves of garden nasturtium have light-colored veins radiating from a central petiole. Leaves can be quite large, up to 10 cm across on some plants.

Nasturtium leaves have the highest hydrophobic properties in the botanical world. No matter how hard or how much it rains, they just do not seem to get wet. They are waterproof. Raindrops will pool on the leaves surface and may even form patterns along the veins.

Scientists are trying to replicate this unique and extreme water repellency for use in textile fabrics.
