Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) (3)

I found several interesting articles on the internet, e.g., here and here, which link snowdrops with the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Please keep in mind that there is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but patients can take drugs to treat its symptoms. Galantamine, an alkaloid in the bulb of snowdrops, is one of them.

Galantamine may help to slow down the destructive processes of Alzheimer’s and dementia. The alkaloid works by temporarily restoring the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain, specifically acetylcholine, improving memory, focus and general cognitive abilities.

Using snowdrops as a remedy at home is not recommended. The bulbs are classed as poison and dosage is very unclear with unpleasant side effects (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss and dizziness). For the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, purified or chemically synthesized alkaloid must be used.
