Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus) (1)

The rainbow lorikeet is a colorful bird from the parrot family. It occurs in coastal regions across northern and eastern Australia.

Rainbow lorikeets grow to be about 30 cm tall and are very fast fliers. They mostly forage on flowers of shrubs or trees to harvest nectar and pollen but also eat fruits, seeds and some insects.

The rainbow lorikeet has been listed by the Australian government as an unwanted organism because of the damage it does to fruit trees. It can ruin fruit crops when it decides to feed on them.

Even though they are considered pests they are a work of art to look at and are actually quite friendly creatures. They truly are a living rainbow with their green, blue, purple, red, orange and yellow feathers.
