Corsican Hellebore (Helleborus argutifolius) (1)

Corsican hellebore is native to the island of Corsica. It also grows on nearby Sardinia. Though locally widespread, it is not known to occur naturally outside the two islands.

Corsican hellebore is a hardy perennial with evergreen, leathery leaves with a spiny toothed edge and bowl-shaped pale green flowers which open in late winter and early spring. The flowers are 2.5 to 5.0 cm across and remain on the plants for a long time.

Corsican hellebore (Helleborus argutifolius) is a relative of the Christmas rose (Helleborus niger) (see previous photographs).
