The photo of a display detail of a fig leaf was captured from below the leaf against the light. The image highlights the different veins for the transport of water, minerals and food (the products of photosynthesis).

The leaf veins are composed of xylem and phloem cells. The xylem moves fluids from the root upwards, entering the leaf through the midrib and then branching off with the help of venules (small veins). The phloem transports food (e.g. sucrose) produced in the leaf to all other parts of the plant.
