Basel Zoo is home to a colony of king and gentoo penguins. The king penguin is native to Antarctica and sub Antarctica. The bird has a black head, chin, and throat, with vivid orange, tear-shaped patches on each side of the head. The orange coloration extends to the upper chest. Its feet look like the skin of a reptile with black and gray scales.
The king penguin is very large compared to other penguin species. Full grown, they can be up to 95 cm tall and weigh up to 15 kilograms.
