King Penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) (5)

Adult king penguins have, in addition to black feathers on their back and white feathers on their chest and underside, bright orange feathers on their ear patches and just below their throat. Adults also display an orange teardrop-shaped patch on the lower part of the bill. Penguins use these luminous pigments to attract mates. Males in good condition will express more extravagant, orange ornaments and, therefore, are more attractive to the females. In this example, the female penguins do most of the choosing.
