Basel Zoo is also home to a colony of gentoo penguins. They live in sub-Antarctica.
The bird has a flamboyant red-orange beak, a black head with white eyelids, and a distinct triangular white patch above each eye, usually extending over the head. The gentoo penguin has a fairly long tail – the most prominent tail of all penguin species. Its feet are peach-colored.
Full grown gentoo penguins are up to 80 cm tall and weigh between 5 and 7 kilograms.
