Liverleaf (Hepatica nobilis) (1)

Liverleaf, also named hepatica or liverwort, is a slow growing, flowering plant in the buttercup family. It is native to woodland in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. The herbaceous semi-evergreen perennial grows from a rhizome.

Liverleaf grows 10–15 cm high. Leaves and flowers emerge directly from the rhizome. The leaves have three lobes and are fleshy and hairless. They emerge during or after flowering and remain green through winter.

The flowers are blue to bluish violet, rarely pink or white. They appear in early spring, and have a diameter of 15 to 30 mm. The flowers have six to nine oval showy sepals, three green bracts and conspicuous white stamens.
