Magnolia (Magnolia × soulangeana) (7)

The fragrant magnolia flowers contain no nectar but have lots of pollen. They are pollinated by beetles [magnolia evolved before bees appeared], which use the protein-rich pollen as food. The fragrance of magnolia flowers is designed to attract beetles. The petals are tough and leathery to withstand chewing by their pollinators.
