Marbled Green (Nyctobrya muralis) (1)

The marbled green is a moth from the owl family (Noctuidae). It is native to Europe. Its wings are white with several shades of green and black markings.

There are around 35,000 species of owl butterflies worldwide. Germany, Austria and Switzerland are home to around 640 species.

The wingspan of the marbled green is 27 to 34 mm, the length of the forewings is 12 to 15 mm. Several subforms have been described.

The marbled green is warmth-loving. It can be found in old vineyards and on lichen covered stone walls. The adults are on the wing during July and August. They are night-active and rest during the day on rocks and walls covered with lichen. There, they are well camouflaged.
