Wood Anemone (Anemone nemorosa)

Wood Anemone (Anemone nemorosa)

The flower of the wood anemone is 2-4 cm in diameter, with six or seven tepals [petal-like segments] with yellow stamens in the center. In the wild the flowers are usually white, sometimes flushed with pink or purple. They lack both fragrance and nectar and it has been suggested that they are primarily self-pollinated.

When the sun is out, the flowers are fully open to embrace the sunshine hours. At night or during rainy weather the flowers close up and drop their graceful head, so that water or dew droplets flow smoothly off the back of the tepals rather than damaging the flowers themselves.
