Basel Carnival (Basler Fasnacht – Cortège) (1)

Carnival processions – in Basel called ‘Cortège’ – take place on Monday and Wednesday afternoon. From floats and wagons, sweets and oranges are handed out and everybody is covered with buckets full of confetti. The ‘Cliques’ (drummers, piccolo players, and a conductor) and the ‘Guggen’ (off-key brass bands) are wearing the same costumes according to the chosen subject of their group. This subject of a Clique is also painted on their lanterns. Texts which deal with this very topic are printed on colorful sheets of paper and are distributed to the spectators.

The photograph was taken during the Cortège on Wednesday afternoon.
