Basel Zoo is home to a small group of African bush elephants since 1952. Their new ‘Tembea’ enclosure opened in March 2017. It covers around 5000 square meters, making it more than double the size of its predecessor. The enclosure consists of various partial outdoor enclosures and a new elephant house. Wallowing, bathing, showering and activity opportunities make the elephants’ daily lives more exciting. The elephants are also able to make use of the ditches separating them from the public.
