Gilthead Seabream (Sparus aurata) (2)

The gilthead seabream is common in the Mediterranean Sea and present along the Eastern Atlantic coasts from Great Britain to Senegal.

The gilthead seabream has a bright silvery skin and a tall back. Typically, it has a large black patch behind the gill flaps. This fish gives off a lovely golden sheen in the sunlight. The color disappears quickly when out of water.

The gilthead seabream commonly reaches about 35 centimeters in length but may reach 70 centimeters and weigh up to about 17 kilograms. The fish is an esteemed food fish; it is generally considered the best-tasting of the breams. However, catches of wild fish have been relatively modest.
