King Penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) (7)

Penguins living in cold climates stay warm thanks to their thick feathers and their blubber under the skin. Feathers and blubber insulate their bodies.

Penguins warm up by turning their dark colored backs to the sun. The dark plumage of a penguin’s dorsal surface absorbs heat from the sun, and this increases body temperature.

One other method penguins use to conserve body heat is huddling and, at the same time, forming a circle. The center of the circle can reach temperatures up to 30° degrees Celsius compared to the -40° degrees along the outer huddle.
