Ostrich (Struthio camelus) (1)

Ostrich (Struthio camelus) (1)

The ostrich is the largest living species of bird. It is distinctive in its appearance, with a long neck and legs and the ability to run at high speeds. The ostrich is flightless and lays the largest egg of any bird species.

Fossil founds indicate that ostriches existed millions of years ago in the Southern parts of the Euro-Asiatic continent. Today, ostriches are native to South Africa where they have been commercially bred for more than 100 years. In the late 1800’s, South African farmers raised almost a million ostriches to meet fashion industry needs [ostrich feathers or plumes were worn as a sign of nobility].

The photo was captured at Basel Zoo recently.
