Great White Pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus (1)

Basel Zoo has a large flock of great white pelicans (Pelecanus onocrotalus). They are very social birds, so you rarely see one alone. They often sun-bath close to the fence and curiously look at the zoo-goers. During these rest periods, pelicans are fun to photograph.

Sedentary populations are found year-round south of the Sahara Desert in Africa. Migratory populations are found from Eastern Europe to Western Mongolia during the breeding season and from northeast Africa through Iraq to north India in the winter (Sept.-Feb.). The birds don’t like the cold.
