Great white pelicans feed mainly on fish, carp in Europe and cichlids in Africa. They usually fish in shallow water and often use teamwork when feeding: a group of 8-12 birds swims into a horseshoe shape to surround the fish, then, all together, they plunge in their beaks and scoop them out. Once a pelican has fish in its pouch, it tilts its head vertically and swallows them whole. The great white pelican has an estimated daily food requirement of 900-1200 grams, equivalent to 2-4 large fish.
In my image, the feet of a great white pelican are shown.
