The black redstart is a small robin-sized bird that has adapted to live at the heart of urban centers. Its name comes from the plumage of the male, which is gray-black with an orange red tail. The tail, from which it and other redstarts get their names [‘start’ is an old word for ‘tail’], is frequently quivered.
A pair of black redstarts has built a nest on top of one of our bee hotels. The actual feeding of the nestlings is a noisy spectacle.
