Common Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) (3) 2022-10-30 Birds 0 Comments At the climax of murmuration thousands of starlings fly in a sphere-like formation, frequently expanding and contracting and changing shape. They seemingly accomplish this without a leader. Each starling changes its course and speed as a result of the movement of its closest neighbors. Thereby the birds manage to fly in a collective mathematical synchrony that still baffles researchers today. For me this ‘dance in the sky’ is a truly amazing wonder which I love to watch over and over. Leave a Reply Cancel reply Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.
