Great white pelicans are gregarious birds that live in large colonies. Pairs are monogamous for a single breeding season. The pair bond extends only to the nesting area. Mates are independent away from the nest.
There is no hierarchy in these large colonies. The birds live together as equals. They gather together at a suitable place on land and each pair tries to claim the best spot. Bickering and pecking are common and are part of the courtship ritual.
