Great White Pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) (9)

Great white pelicans actually have a pure white plumage. Their feathers need to be greased for good buoyancy, as is usual for waterfowl. This is done with an oily secretion from the bristle gland which is located on the back of the bird. The secretion of great white pelicans is pink and, thus, is responsible for the pink color of this species.
