Green-Veined White (Pieris napi) (2)

Green-Veined White (Pieris napi) (2)

The green-veined white is very common. Its wings are white, with prominent greenish veins on the hind wing. These veins are an illusion created by a subtle combination of yellow and black scales. The upper wings have different numbers of spots: The female has two on each forewing, the male only one.

This common butterfly prefers damp areas with lush vegetation, where its foodplant is found (wild and cultivated crucifers). The butterfly can also be found in gardens.

I captured the green-veined white in the garden of a neighbor when it was feeding on flowers of purpletop vervain (Verbena bonariensis).
