Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) (2)

The round trip from tropical Africa to the Arctic Circle is performed in a series of steps by up to six successive painted lady generations.

This migration pattern is similarly reflected in the United States, where the painted lady migrates from Mexico to the northern United States and Canada, and back.

The regular migratory circuits of the painted lady are similar to those of the monarch butterfly in Central and North America. Thus, this unique adaptation evolved at least twice.
