Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria) (3)

There are typically three generations per year. The flight periods of the adults of each generation overlap, so they can be seen from March through to October. The speckled wood can overwinter either as a caterpillar or as a pupa.

Adult speckled woods feed on aphid honeydew left on leaves of ash, oak and birch. They are rarely seen on flowers except early and late in the year when there are few aphids.
