The banded demoiselle is one of the most beautiful damselflies in Central Europe. Mature males have a metallic blue-green body with a broad, dark band across the wings. Female banded demoiselles are metallic green and lack the band on the wings. They also have a tiny white spot [called ‘pseudo-pterostigma’] towards the tip of each wing which males lack [see today’s photograph].
The image was taken yesterday at a pond in one of Basel’s recreational areas [GrĂ¼n99].
