Helleborus niger, also called ‘Christmas Rose’ or ‘Winter Rose’, is a small poisonous perennial herb of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). It has evergreen leaves and generally blooms between December and March when most other plants are still dormant.

Each Christmas rose clump produces groups of 2 or 3 large nodding flowers which are generally 4-8 cm across.
