Winter aconites (Eranthis hyemalis) (2)

By the time trees have leaves again, the flowers of winter aconites have already done their job. After pollination by bees little green seed pods begin to appear among the dying foliage. Having set seed, winter aconite slips quietly back into dormancy.

The entire plant, but especially the tuber, is quite poisonous and may cause nausea, vomiting, colic attacks and visual disturbances.

The photo was taken yesterday in Basel’s city park ‚Grün80’.
