There are more than 200 species of jasmine, in numerous shapes, sizes, colors and growing seasons. They all belong to the olive family.
Winter jasmine was initially found in China and called ‘Yingchun’. This means ‘the flower that welcomes spring’. It lacks the sweet, delicate scent normally associated with jasmine plants.
Bright yellow flowers will appear along the plant’s bare stems (‘nudiflorum’ means ‘naked flower’). They will bring a burst of color into gardens during the winter months.
As an early bloomer, the yellow flowers attract bees and other insects while other plants are still dormant. Winter jasmine is an excellent nectar source.
