Chinese Witch Hazel (Hamamelis mollis) (3)

Today’s photograph was taken at the botanical garden of the University of Basel and shows the red ribbon-like petals of the witch hazel hybrid Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Diane’.

The bushy, deciduous shrub flowers from January to February on the bare branches. In autumn its bright green leaves turn into striking shades of yellow, orange and red before falling. The woody fruit capsules hold two shiny-black seeds.
