Chinese Witch Hazel (Hamamelis mollis) (4)

Chinese witch hazel (Hamamelis mollis) is a medium-size deciduous shrub with a rounded shape. Its flowers appear in January and February before the leaves and last several weeks. They have narrow yellow petals up to 2-4 cm long, surrounding red centers called ‘calyces’. Their scent is very noticeable and pleasant. The blooms are followed by the production of inconspicuous, green (turning black) fruits.

The photograph was taken in Basel’s largest city park ‘GrĂ¼n 80’. As background I used a black reflector disc.
