Peacock Fly (Callopistromyia annulipes) (1)

The picture-winged fly Callopistromyia annulipes, also named peacock fly, is native to and widespread across North America. This species has recently been introduced accidentally to Europe. It was first discovered in Germany in 2006 and has spread widely since then.

Both sexes of the peacock fly have a body length of 5 to 8 mm. This corresponds to the size of fruit flies and, thus, they can be easily overlooked. Males and females have their wings raised vertically and pointed forward. When these flies dance and strut, their highly patterned wings rise like feathers on a peacock. This is an astonishing sight!
