Scorpion Fly (Panorpa communis) (4)

Scorpion Fly (Panorpa communis) (4)

The scorpion fly has a black and yellow body, with a reddish head and tail, It also has a long beak and dark patches on the wings. The male has a scorpion-like appearance with pair of claspers at the end of its tail for holding the female during mating. Although the tail looks dangerous, scorpion flies are harmless and do not sting.

The specimen in my photograph is a female.
