Blue-Winged Grasshopper (Oedipoda caerulescens) (1)

Oedipoda caerulescens is a short-horned grasshopper that lives in dry and warm regions with sparse vegetation. There is considerable variation in color in this species from brown-reddish to gray, and quite light to very dark, depending on the sort of soil it inhabits. It usually remains unobserved until it takes flight and flies up, showing the coloring of the hind wings, a superb turquoise blue underlined by a marginal black band. Length: 15-21 mm (male) and 22-28 mm (female). The stridulation of the blue-winged grasshopper is very quiet.
