The great, green bush-cricket is characterized by strong hind limbs for leaping, powerful mouthparts for chewing and threadlike, long and thin antennae with over 30 segments.
Grasshoppers use the antennae to make sense of their surroundings. Antennae perceive odors, touch, humidity, vibration, wind velocity and direction. The antennae are also used extensively in courtship. Their conspicuous waving is an integral part of the male’s behavioral pattern.
