The common field grasshopper is abundant and widespread in Europe, north Africa, and temperate Asia (Western Palearctic). It prefers dry habitats and is ubiquitous in open, sunny, grassy areas, including gardens. It is often found in agricultural fields but prefers uncultivated land.
The common field grasshopper has a length of 15 to 25 mm. It is brownish, but the color varies, striped and mottled forms occur with parts of the body varying from buff through orange to purple.
