Common Issid Bug (Issus coleoptratus) (1)

Currently I am photographing planthoppers. These are small plant-sucking bugs that leap when disturbed. Planthoppers are difficult to find, in addition they are camera-shy. Capturing them is a true challenge for a nature photographer. Fascinating, often very detailed photos are the reward.

In the northwest corner of Switzerland – this is where I live – I occasionally stumble into a beetle cicada. Beetle cicadas belong to a species-rich family of cicadas that is particularly widespread in arid tropical and subtropical regions, with around 1500 species worldwide. In Europe, 150 species in 30 genera are known. Only 2 genera with 3 species occur in Germany.

The common issid bug dwells on woody plants and deciduous trees. This tiny insect can be observed during the adult’s active period from early summer to early winter.

The common issid bug can reach a length between 6 and 7 mm. Its coloration can vary from light brown and olive to nearly black. The huge number of cross-veins in the wings is very characteristic. They make the animal unable to fly.
