Daybreak in the Petite Camargue Alsacienne (9)

Today’s photo shows the view through a window of an observation hut. These huts are especially valued by ornithologists because they allow watching e.g. waterbirds in close proximity relatively undisturbed.

The Petite Camargue Alsacienne is home to several colonies of gray herons (Ardea cinerea). This fascinating, large bird feeds mainly on fish, which it hunts by patiently standing completely still at the side of the water, and striking rapidly when a fish comes into range.
