Borage (Borago officinalis) (2)

Borage, an unusually pretty herb, grows to a height of 60–100 cm.. It is hairy all over the stems and leaves. The star-shaped blue flowers are borne on red stalks. They will fade pink as they age and last through the whole summer.

Individual flowers are 2.0 to 2.5 cm across, consisting of 5 lanceolate blue petals, 5 green sepals, 5 dark blue to black anthers that merge together to form a central beak, and an ovary with a single style.

Borage flowers are particularly attractive to bees. After a bee has visited a flower it refills with nectar within a very short time, making borage a great pollinator-friendly plant for gardens.
