Tall Thimbleweed (Anemone Virginiana) (1)

Anemone virginiana is a perennial in the buttercup family. The plant grows 30–80 centimeters tall and flowers from May until July. The flowers are white or greenish-white and have a diameter of about 2.5 cm.

After flowering the fruits are produced in thimble-like seed heads which becoming fluffy before the wind disperses their seeds. The root system is rhizomatous, often producing vegetative offsets from the mother plant.

The plant can be found in 38 out of the 50 states in the U.S. and is located anywhere from Maine to Minnesota, and as far south as Georgia and Louisiana. There it grows in dry and open woods.
