Girdled Snail (Hygromia cinctella) (1)

Hygromia cinctella, commonly named girdled snail, is a small European species of air-breathing land snail. It is native to the Mediterranean region and is now found in central and northern Europe. This snail is travelling around with potted plants bought at garden centers. Once in a garden it soon becomes established.

Girdled snails naturally inhabit open areas with herbaceous vegetation and low shrubs, often close to small water bodies. Girdled snails are often found to aggregate in large numbers. Girdled snails feed on a variety of plant materials. Thus, this species poses a threat to native plant communities.
