Wolf Spider (Pardosa lugubris) (1)

Wolf Spider (Pardosa lugubris) (1)

Wolf spiders are characterized by a good vision, not capturing their prey in webs, and females carrying their egg sacs with them.

Wolf spiders got their name from the way they hunt, which the people who named them thought was like the way wolves hunt. However, wolves hunt in packs but spiders are solitary and hunt individually.

Wolf spiders are very fast and can reach a speed of 50 cm per second over very short distance. They occasionally inflict sharp stinging bites on humans.

The male wolf spider is smaller than the female, so to avoid any trouble the male approaches the female with caution. The male wolf spider weaves his front legs to identify himself and make his intentions clear.

The wolf spider in my photograph is a female.
