Grass Lily (Ornithogalum umbellatum) (1)

The grass lily is a bulbous flowering plant in the asparagus family. It is native throughout most of southern and central Europe, and north-western Africa.

The grass lily is a perennial plant, also known as the garden star-of-Bethlehem, nap-at-noon, or eleven-o’clock lady. It occurs in tufts of basal linear leaves, producing conspicuous white starlike flowers, in mid to late spring. The flowers open late in the day [hence some of its common names] and close at night. When closed the buds have a green stripe on the outside. The plants dies back after flowering to an underground storage bulb.

The plant, especially the bulb and flowers, are poisonous. They contains cardiac glycosides toxic to humans and livestock.
