Horned Pansy (Viola cornuta) (3)

Native to Spain and the Pyrenees, Viola cornuta grows throughout temperate regions of the world. Plants are compact with small flowers patterned with rays or lines in a deeper or contrasting color. These spurs are nectar guides that lead pollinators such as bees and butterflies to their reward.

Some pansy varieties have two-colored faces and others charming whiskers. And yes, pansies have ‘personalities’.

Some pansy varieties are known for their pleasant fragrance, while others do not have a noticeable scent at all. Yellow and blue pansies seem to have the strongest scent, and they tend to have a stronger fragrance in the early morning and at dusk.

The photo was captured on our balcony yesterday.
